[PitsLamp-short] Fail conference

Jan Verheyen on the fail conference

Today and the next 2 days I’m shooting for my client iMinds at the Creative media days.

Today one of the several conferences was the Fail conference where one of the speakers was Jan Verheyen.

It was one of the better conferences, I attended/photographed. Great speakers, very interesting content and awesome ideas. The best speaker for me was Filip Maertens with this quote: “Don’t let your fear of failure strip you from your passions”

If you are attending one of the following days, come and say hi.

Happy accident

Happy mistake: Tunde Fekete

Sometimes all you need to get great looking photos is a stupid mistake on your part. Let me explain that.

Last week, I was helping out a fellow photographer Gunther Frans during a portfolio shoot. As Gunther was working with a very experienced hungarian model, I asked if I could take some shots with my Mamiya RB67. I wanted to test some new film and try out the RB67 in a studio setting.

Happy Mistake: Tünde Fekete

After finishing the roll of Rollei Retro 80S I unloaded the camera, licked the paper closing strip and threw it in my bag. Apparently due to the high temperature in Gunther’s studio, the closing strip came lose and when I got home, the roll was partially unravelled. I should have put it in it’s container, taped it shut and only take it out of the container in my darkbag. Off course I presumed the roll would be ruined but just for the heck of it, I developed it anyway.

As expected most of the roll was overexposed, but I managed to recover 4 images, of which 2 turned out absolutely great. Now I need to figure out a way to get consistent results with this kind of light leaks.

Film noir

Film noir test

Sometimes you need to challenge yourself and get outside of that comfort zone. I always liked the look of film noir very much, it’s dramatic, dark and is beautiful for both genders. It also works marvelous in black and white which is perfect for my portraits on film.

When I tried to create look for the first time during a sweet summer evening, I couldn’t get the perfect look. So I asked Stijn to help me figure out what I was doing wrong and pose for me.

Film noir test 2

We used a speedlight with a long snoot and another one almost completely blacked out.

I think I can say, successful test and another lighting trick in the bag.

New design, updated portfolio

The last months I’ve been shooting a couple of editorial portraits for some magazines. One of them was the CFO of IBM Europe for the IBM inspire magazine.

Project 30-30-30-30

A light painting shot with me in it

Everybody tells me that becoming 30 is a huge deal, so I wanted to do something huge to celebrate that. It took me a year to come up with an idea. But last friday it hit me. That’s when project 30-30-30-30 was born.

So what is project 30-30-30-30. It’s a fairly simple concept: I’ll photograph 30 people during a shoot of 30 minutes each, I’ll use 30 cameras during the day and will shoot 30 photos of each person. Sophie Segers will be there to provide those who wish with some make-up.

Do you want to be part of this unique concept and maybe get photographed in the process, join me and the crew this Saturday 2104 at Bar Buro in Ghent. More info can be found at the Facebook event page

A big thanks goes out to Bar Buro for providing me with the location. To Sony and Nikon for lending me some cameras.

Friday the 13th

In contrary to popular superstition, I don’t believe in the bad luck of friday the 13th. To make sure that feeling spreads, there is a 26% discount for everyone, who contacts me and mentions friday the 13th.

So what are you waiting for, go over to the contactform or call me at +32 486 362961. Hurry because the offer is only valid until monday 16 april 2012 23h59 CET.

Sometimes you are surprised by the story one photo can tell. That is how I could do nothing else but to make this photo on the beach of Ostend while on a walk with Sara and Claire.
